Introduction
George Kellett, the patriarch of the Kellett Family, arrived in Canada in the early 1830’s and settled in Smith Township in what is now the town of Bridgenorth. He returned to England where he married Carolyn Stubbs, then returned to Smith Township . By 1850 they had four children. Carolyn passed away shortly after the birth of their fourth child leaving George with four quite young children. He remarried to Mary Fisher from the North Monaghan area of Peterborough. Shortly thereafter, they moved north and settled in what was Lutterworth Township and there they raised eight more children resulting in a family of 12. This resulted in twelve branches within the Kellett family. As the children grew up and began their own families, they spread as far west as British Columbia and south to New York as well as throughout the county.. Family names such as Bowen, McKelvey, Otto, Giles, Miller, Austin, Sewell and Roberts, to name a few, all descended originally from the Kellett Family. The book deals with each of these branches and the contributions made in the development of Haliburton County as well as other parts of Canada..
Bio of author:
I was born in 1935 in the house illustrated on the book cover. The era was shortly after the Great Depression. Times were hard especially in rural Ontario. There were no electricity thus no televisions and no telephones. Employment was scarce to non existent. Yet, in many ways my family, who lived on a farm, was fortunate. We had food for the table and clothes to wear. Life was simple. As I grew to be an adult, I was taught to appreciate what I had and that to achieve success a person had to work for it. I am the great grandson of George Kellett, the family patriarch.
